About This Course

Trauma is all around us—research suggests that 70% of people worldwide have been exposed to a traumatic event in their lifetime. Not only has it impacted the majority of people, but trauma is also one of the leading causes of pastoral burnout and exit from ministry. While trauma is ever-present and oft-discussed, fully understanding and supporting those impacted by it can be a significant challenge. In this Foundations of Trauma Ministry course, you will learn to approach trauma in a biblically faithful and psychologically informed way in order to both provide meaningful care to trauma survivors and navigate your own experiences of trauma.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Discover the long-term impact and pervasiveness of trauma on individuals and communities
  • Identify the different potential outcomes of a traumatic experience (PTSD, Complex Trauma, or Resilience)
  • Take steps to safeguard yourself from the negative impact of trauma on pastors and leaders (secondary, vicarious, burnout)
  • Develop a pastoral caregiving framework for working with trauma survivors among your staff and congregation

This course is the recommended third course in the Certificate of Emotional Health in Ministry.
